At Flow Control Solutions, we help municipalities and utilities complete critical pipeline maintenance and infrastructure upgrades without unnecessary service interruptions. One of our recent projects involved a double 36-inch (900 mm) line stop on a major water transmission main. This complex operation demonstrates our ability to safely isolate large-diameter pipelines while allowing essential repairs and modifications to be completed with minimal impact on the surrounding water system.

Seamless Isolation and Bypassing

When taking a critical water transmission main out of service is not an option, Flow Control Solutions provides safe and efficient line stopping solutions that keep water systems operating. For this project, our team isolated the transmission main on both sides of the work area and installed a 24-inch (600 mm) high-pressure carbon steel bypass rated for operating pressures of up to 285 PSI. This temporary bypass maintained continuous water service to downstream customers while the required maintenance was completed safely and efficiently.

Engineered Solutions with Weld-On Line Stop Fittings

To ensure a safe and reliable installation, Flow Control Solutions used weld-on line stop fittings installed in accordance with CSA Z662-19 In-Service Welding requirements. Our qualified welding procedures are engineered to maintain pipeline integrity while supporting safe work on pressurized water systems.

The project utilized JCM 440 T16FB line stop sleeves, which are manufactured to meet AWWA M11 requirements and are supplied with engineered calculations and certified documentation. This combination of proven equipment and industry-compliant installation practices provides a durable, dependable solution for critical water infrastructure projects.

High-Quality Materials for Long-Term Performance

For enhanced long-term corrosion protection, the JCM 440 T16FB line stop fittings used on this project feature an NSF-approved epoxy coating, making them well suited for potable water applications and demanding operating environments.

Key specifications of the fittings include:

  • Line Stop Plug: Ductile iron manufactured to ASTM A536
  • Plug O-Ring: Nitrile (NBR/Buna-N) rubber with an operating temperature range of -40°F to 180°F (-40°C to 82°C)
  • Blind Flange: Class 150 ASTM A36 carbon steel, protected with an epoxy coating
  • Blind Flange Gasket: Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR), compatible with water, salt solutions, mild acids, and bases, with a temperature range of -40°F to 150°F (-40°C to 65°C) and intermittent service up to 180°F (82°C)
  • Push Plug and Pin Hardware: SAE Grade 8

The JCM 440 Line Stop Sleeve product line is widely used for water infrastructure projects because of its durable construction, engineered design, and versatility across a broad range of field applications. Available in carbon steel as well as 304 and 316 stainless steel, these sleeves are compatible with line stopping equipment rated for operating pressures of up to 250 PSI, making them a dependable solution for municipal and industrial pipeline maintenance.
